Art and architecture were greatly favored by the Pallavas, who ruled over portions of South India from the fourth to the ninth centuries CE. Their contributions, particularly in the areas of structural and rock-cut styles, established the groundwork for temple architecture in South India.

Rock-Cut Architecture

Pallavas invented the first rock-cut cave temples. The transition from wooden to stone architecture was evident in the simple pillared halls and shrines of these temples, which were carved directly into the hillsides. Famous examples of early Dravidian architecture and monolithic craftsmanship are the cave temples at Mahendravadi, Mandagapattu, and Mamandur.

They are advised for the storage of priceless or delicate objects that could be harmed by moisture or extremely high or low temperatures. They built in both structural and rock-cut styles. Many subsequent kingdoms were influenced by the Chalukya style.

Deccan Kingdoms Art and Architecture After the 14th Century

The Deccan saw the rise of numerous new kingdoms after the 14th century, including the Vijayanagara and Bahmani Empires. These kingdoms constructed magnificent palaces, temples, and forts in a variety of architectural styles. Beautiful temples with tall towers known as gopurams were constructed by the Vijayanagara kings. Carved images of dancers, animals, and gods adorned the pillars and walls. Strong forts and exquisite tombs with arches and domes were constructed by the Bahmani kings, who were influenced by Islam. This period was particularly unique because of the fusion of Islamic and Hindu art and architecture.
