Social psychology is the scientific study of how people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are influenced by the actual, imagined or implied presence of others. Social psychologists study various social influences on human behaviour, like conformity, obedience, persuasion, and attitude change. The field aims to understand how we think about, influence, and relate to one another. Many foundational theories in social psychology help explain human social behaviours. For example, social exchange theory proposes that people aim to maximize rewards and minimize costs in interactions. Cognitive dissonance theory suggests that when people's attitudes or actions conflict, they experience psychological tension that motivates them to resolve the inconsistency. Social learning theory describes how behaviours and attitudes can be learned through observation and imitation. Attribution theory examines how people explain and make sense of the behaviours of others and themselves. These and other theories provide frameworks for understanding social behaviours. Despite great progress in explaining human social behaviour, there remain challenges and problems in social psychology. One difficulty is replication - many social psychology findings have proven difficult to reproduce in subsequent studies. Another issue is overgeneralization, where findings from limited studies are applied too broadly. There is also debate about whether experimental studies in laboratories capture real-world social behaviours accurately.

Social Learning Theory

Social learning theory proposes that people learn through observation and imitation of others. We learn new behaviours, attitudes, and values by watching and modeling those around us, especially parents, teachers, and peers. This social learning plays an important role in child development and socialization.

According to social learning theory, there are four processes involved in observational learning, as stated below.

  • Attention: Children need to pay attention to the behavior they are observing to learn it. More salient or interesting behaviors are more likely to be attended to and learned.
  • Retention: Children must remember or retain the observed behavior to reproduce it later. Using verbal instructions, images, or rehearsal can help with retention.
  • Reproduction: Children must be able to physically reproduce the observed behavior. This may require guidance and practice.
  • Motivation: There needs to be sufficient motivation, either through reinforcement or incentive, for children to perform the observed behavior. Rewards and punishments influence which behaviors are learned and imitated.

Social Learning Methods

There are a few key methods through which social learning occurs because of the following.

  • Modeling and imitation: This is where a person observes and imitates the behavior of another person, known as a model. Children often learn through modeling parents, teachers, and peers. Adults also learn new skills and behaviors by observing and imitating others.
  • Conditioning: Classical and operant conditioning processes shape social learning. Classical conditioning associates neutral stimuli with emotional responses, while operant conditioning uses reinforcement and punishment to modify behavior. These conditioning processes influence what behaviors are learned through social interaction.

Problems of Social Psychology

The problems have been stated below.

  • Replication issues: Many studies in social psychology have proven difficult to replicate in subsequent experiments. This has raised questions about the reliability and robustness of some social psychology findings.
  • Overgeneralization: Some research findings from social psychology experiments are applied too broadly to real-world situations without considering the limitations of the samples and settings used in the studies. This can lead to overgeneralized conclusions.
  • Ecological validity: Some critics argue that laboratory experiments in social psychology lack ecological validity, meaning they do not accurately represent or simulate real-world social situations and behaviors. This limits how applicable the findings are.
  • Ethical issues: Some social psychology experiments involve deception or manipulating participants, which raises ethical concerns about the potential harm inflicted and the need for informed consent.
  • Cultural bias: Much social psychology research has been conducted on Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) populations. There are questions about whether findings generalize to non-Western and diverse populations.
  • Underestimating agency: Some critics argue that social psychology experiments exaggerate the power of social influences and norms while underestimating human agency, free will, and individual differences that can lead people to resist social pressures.

Developmental psychology seeks to understand how human beings change and develop across the lifespan from infancy through late adulthood. Developmental psychologists study how people grow and alter physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally at different life stages.

A key focus is child development, as childhood is a period of dramatic change and growth. Developmental psychologists study how children progress in important areas like language acquisition, cognitive development, emotional development, and social development. They look at how children develop the ability to think, reason, problem-solve, and understand the world.

Development is seen as a complex interaction between maturation and environmental influences. Maturation refers to the natural unfolding of genetic abilities as children grow. Environmental influences include parenting, education, culture, and experience that impact development. Developmental psychologists study both biological and environmental factors and their interactions.

Several major theories aim to explain child development. Jean Piaget's stages of cognitive development propose that children progress through qualitative stages as their thinking becomes more complex and abstract. Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory outlines stages of social and identity development across the lifespan. Lev Vygotsky emphasized the central role of social and cultural influences on cognitive development.

Research methods in developmental psychology involve longitudinal studies that follow children over time, observational studies of children in natural settings, and experiments that manipulate and control variables.

Key findings show that early childhood is a sensitive period for development, establishing a foundation for later growth. Development is also nonlinear, proceeding at different rates for different abilities. Continuity exists, as many abilities and tendencies track from childhood into adulthood. Yet there is also change as children acquire new skills and competencies.
