NDA Salary & Job Profile 2025: Pay Scale & Career Growth

The NDA officer salary for 2025 has been released along with the official notification of UPSC NDA. The Joint Training Team welcomes candidates at NDA and the salary and perks of the candidates start from here. During the training period, the candidates are expected to be given a monthly stipend of INR. 56100/- per month as per level 10 of the matrix pay. The training period is for three years. Candidates are then promoted and posted as per their ability. 

The UPSC NDA Salary is as per the 7th Pay Commission and has undergone several changes over the years. Apart from the basic salary candidates are given several allowances such as DA, High Altitude Allowance, Uniform Allowance, etc.

  • NDA officers receive a monthly stipend of INR 56,100 during their three-year training period, beginning at Level 10 of the pay matrix.
  • Upon completion of training, NDA officers start their career with a starting salary of INR 56,100 per month and can eventually earn up to INR 2,50,000 per month, depending on their rank and years of service.
  • The salary includes various allowances like Dearness Allowance (DA), Military Service Pay (MSP), Grade Pay, House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Transport Allowance.
  • NDA officers are entitled to additional allowances such as High Altitude Allowance, Counter Insurgency Allowance, and Field Area Allowance, depending on their posting and service conditions.

UPSC NDA Salary Structure 2025

The NDA salary ranges from ₹56,100 to ₹2,50,000 or more depending on the above factors. The NDA Officer salary for UPSC NDA Officers differs for the ranks in the three defence wings:

  • Army
  • Navy
  • Air Force

For example, a Lieutenant's basic salary differs from that of a Captain or Major. Allowances such as dearness allowance, transportation allowance, and house rent allowance also contribute to total salary. The NDA Officer salary for the UPSC NDA Officers in the three wings of the Indian Defence System as per their ranks is mentioned below.

Several Factors Influence the NDA Officer's Salary:

  • Officer's rank: The basic salary varies according to the officer's rank like Lieutenant, Captain or Major. Higher ranks receive a higher basic pay.
  • Allowances: Allowances like DA, transportation allowance and HRA contribute to the total salary. Officers posted in difficult terrains get more allowances.
  • Years of service: Officers who have served for longer get promotions with higher pay and benefits. Their salary increases over time.
  • Promotions: Promotions to higher ranks lead to an increase in salary and benefits.

NDA Training Period Salary

The UPSC NDA exam is conducted twice a year and includes two selection processes - a written examination and SSB Interview. Candidates who qualify for both rounds and make it to the merit list are sent to the National Defence Academy for their training.

NDA Salary During Training:

  • Though officers' salary and benefits start from the beginning of NDA training, candidates are considered commissioned officers only after completing the 3-year training.
  • During training, candidates are paid a training period salary as per admissible allowances applicable for the training period.
  • Training period salary includes arrears for the total training duration i.e. if there are any unpaid allowances that should have been given, cadets will receive those payments later on.

NDA In Hand Salary 2025

Candidates who are eventually selected for the NDA receive a competitive monthly salary. The information provided below will assist you in understanding the NDA salary per month. The following is a breakdown of NDA salary per month: 

  1. Basic Pay: The basic pay of an officer is the fixed salary that they receive based on their rank. The monthly basic pay for a Lieutenant ranges from Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 2,25,000 for a Major General.
  2. Dearness Allowance (DA): A DA is a stipend paid to an officer to help offset the rising cost of living. The DA is calculated as a percentage of the basic pay and varies by location and inflation rate. The DA rate is 17% of the basic pay as of 2021.
  3. Military Service Pay (MSP): It is a stipend paid to officers in the armed forces to compensate them for the risks and hardships of their job. The monthly MSP ranges from Rs. 15,500 for a Lieutenant to Rs. 30,000 for a Major General.
  4. Grade Pay: A fixed amount that an officer receives based on their rank is known as grade pay. The monthly grade pay ranges from Rs. 5,400 for a Lieutenant to Rs. 10,000 for a Major General.
  5. House Rent Allowance (HRA): An HRA is an allowance paid to an officer to compensate for housing expenses. The HRA amount varies by location and ranges from 8% to 24% of basic pay.
  6. Transport Allowance: A transportation allowance is a stipend paid to an officer to cover travel expenses under NDA salary per month. The monthly transport allowance ranges from Rs. 3,600 to Rs. 7,200, depending on rank and location.

The NDA salary per month is higher than the majority of private sector salaries. However, the job responsibilities and working conditions of an NDA officer are very different from those of a private sector employee.

NDA Salary 2025: Allowances, Perks, and Benefits

The candidates serving in the National Defence Forces are entitled to numerous perks and benefits in the form of allowances along with their UPSC NDA Salary. The 2025 perks for NDA graduates will be announced by the commission soon. The aspirants can have a look at the following expected allowances and the criteria which are followed for a particular allowance.

1. Flying Allowance: 

The Army Aviators (Pilots) serving in the Army Aviation Corps are entitled to a flying allowance at Rs 25,000/- p.m.

2. Other allowances:

The other allowances offered to the cadets are listed below.

Depending upon rank and area of posting, officers posted to Field Areas will be eligible for the following Field Area allowances.

4. High Altitude Allowance: 

  • Siachen Allowance: Candidates posted to Siachen are entitled to a Siachen Allowance of Rs 42,500/- per month. 
  • Other: NDA officers posted to high-altitude regions are benefited from the following allowances.

5. Counter Insurgency Allowance:

Depending upon the type of area of posting, the officer posted will be eligible for the following Counter Insurgency Allowance.

6. Transport Allowance (TPTA):

Higher TPTA Cities (UA) are Patna, Lucknow, Kolkata, Delhi, Kanpur, Hyderabad, Ahmadabad, Surat, Kochi, Bengaluru, Kozhikode, Indore, Nagpur, Pune, Greater Mumbai, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Ghaziabad, Chennai. The TPTA allowance is admissible to those service personnel of NDA who have been provided with the facility of Government transport.

7. Other Allowances:

Some additional allowances are also given to the officers which are listed below.

Hostel Subsidy Rs. 6,750/- per month per child for two eldest surviving only (admissible from Nursery to Class 12th).

Uniform Allowance Rs 20,000/- per year.

8. Monetary Support In Case of Death or Disablement

The UPSC will release the 2025 structure in case of death or disablement soon. Here are the 2023 figures. The following monetary benefits are available to the Cadets (Direct)/NoKs in the event of invaliding on medical grounds/death of a Cadet (Direct) due to causes attributable to or aggravated by military training:

Disablement
  • Monthly Ex-gratia amount of Rs. 9,000/- per month.
  • Ex-gratia disability award at Rs. 16200/- per month shall be payable in addition to 100% of disability during the period of disablement subject to pro-rata reduction in case the degree of disablement is less than 100%.
  • No disability award shall be payable in cases where the degree of disablement is less than 20%.
  • Constant Attendant Allowance (CAA) at Rs 6750/- per month for 100% disabled on the recommendation of Invaliding Medical Board (IBM).

9. NDA Officer Insurance 2025 Policy

The UPSC will release the 2025 insurance policy soon. Here are the 2023 figures.

Army Group Insurance Fund:

Cadets get insurance cover of ₹15 lakh on payment of a one-time non-refundable premium of ₹7,200 from the date of joining pre-commission training (3 years). Cadets who are relegated to a lower term have to pay an additional premium of ₹1,355 (subject to revision) for each such term.

  • Invalidated Cadets:
    • Cadets invalidated with 100% disability get ₹15 lakh.
  • Cadets with 20-100% disability get amounts proportionate to disability percentage:
    • 100% disability: ₹15 lakh
    • 20% disability: ₹ 3 lakh
  • Cadets with less than 20% disability get an Ex-Gratia Grant of:
    • ₹50,000 for first two years
    • ₹1 lakh for the third year
  • Exceptions:
    • Disability due to alcoholism, drug addiction or pre-enrollment origin does not qualify.
    • Cadets withdrawn, expelled or leaving voluntarily are not eligible.
  • Other Details:
    • The scheme does not have a savings component.
    • Premiums and benefit amounts are subject to revision.

For Lady/Gentlemen Cadets:

Lady/ Gentlemen Cadets during pre-commission training are insured for ₹1 crore from 1 April 2022. This insurance cover is same as for officers of the Regular Army.

  • Benefits for Invalidated Cadets:
    • Cadets invalidated with 100% disability get a one-time lump sum of ₹25 lakhs.
    • 20% disability gets ₹5 lakhs and less than 20% gets an ex-gratia grant of ₹50,000.
  • Exceptions:
    • Disability due to alcoholism, drug addiction or pre-existing conditions does not qualify.
    • Cadets withdrawn, expelled or leaving voluntarily are not eligible for benefits.
  • Monthly Subscription:
    • Lady/ Gentlemen Cadets have to pay a monthly subscription of ₹10,000 (subject to revision) in advance to become members under the AGI scheme.
    • The subscription for relegated periods also needs to be paid at the same rate.

NDA Officer Cost of Training 2025

  • The cost of training including accommodation, books, uniforms, boarding, and medical treatment will be borne by the Government. 
  • Parents or guardians of cadets, will, however, be required to meet their pocket and other private expenses. 
  • If in any case a cadet’s parents or guardian is unable to meet wholly or partly even this expenditure financial assistance of Rs. 1000.00 p.m. for the period of training may be granted by the Government whose parents' income is less than Rs. 21,000/- per month. 
  • Cadets whose parent’s or guardian’s income exceeds Rs. 21,000/- per month will not be liable for the assistance.
  • If more than one son/ward simultaneously undergoes training at NDA, IMA, OTA, and corresponding training establishments in the Navy and Air Force, then BOTH would be eligible for financial assistance.

Candidates finally selected for training at the Academy will be required to deposit the following amount with the Commandant, National Defence Academy, on their arrival there.
