Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFThe administrative and Academic Reform Committee of the UGC recommended the choice-based credit system in higher education.
The choice-based credit system in higher education:
- This system provides choice for students to select from the prescribed courses (core, elective or minor, or soft skill courses)
- It is a learner-centric approach
- Here credit is just a unit to measure the coursework
- The University Grants Commission (UGC) has initiated several measures to bring equity, efficiency, and excellence to the Higher Education System of country
- That includes innovation and improvements in curriculum, teaching-learning process, examination and evaluation systems, besides governance and other matters.
- There are three types of credit courses,
- Core course
- Elective course
- Foundation course
- Semester: A set of 15-18 weeks of academic work equivalent to 90 actual teaching days.
- Credit Point: It is the product of grade point and the number of credits for a course.
- Credit: A unit by which the course work is measured. It determines the number of hours of instruction required per week. One credit is equivalent to one hour of teaching (lecture or tutorial) or two hours of practical work/field work per week.
- Grade Point: It is a numerical weight allotted to each letter grade on a 10-point scale
- Letter Grade: It is an index of the performance of students in a said course. Grades are denoted by letters O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P, and F.
- Justice Verma Commission on Teacher Education, 1966: quality enhancement of teacher education
- Ramamurti Committee on Higher Education,1986: NEP review committee under the chairmanship of Achariya Ramamurti.
