JEE Main Frequently Asked Questions

What is JEE? Explain in simple terms.

Answer: JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination, this is a prestigious national-level engineering examination that is conducted to get admission into reputed institutes like the IITs, NITs, IIITs or other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). JEE is conducted for a large number of students each year, and it is considered one of the toughest undergraduate engineering entrance examinations in India. The JEE has two phases - JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced.

What is JEE Main? Explain in simple terms.

Answer: The JEE Main is the first phase of the JEE, more than 12 lakh students participated in the Examination out of which about 10% pass the cutoff. The JEE Main is the door admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. This examination is conducted by NTA. What are we supposed to study for JEE?

Answer: For both JEE Main and JEE Advanced, the concepts from classes 11 and 12 are important, and the syllabus for the JEE is NCERT oriented. However, the level of questions is much higher than board examinations or other NCERT-level questions.

How many attempts are there for JEE?

Answer: There are three JEE Main attempts year-wise, that is, the year of passing class 12, and the next two years. Each year, the JEE Main is held 4 times, however, the attempts per year may change later. For JEE Advanced, you have only 2 attempts, first, in the year of passing class 12 and the immediate next year. No further attempts are provided.

How to prepare for both Boards and JEE?

Answer: During class 12, many students face such a dilemma. In this case, prefer Board Examinations, since you have to score more than or equal to 75% in Boards to get admitted to reputed institutes through JEE.

The syllabus of Boards and the JEE are very similar, in fact, the JEE has a much more vast syllabus than Boards as it required the grasping of detailed information. Hence, preparing Board Examination is a pillar for the JEE, however, you are expected to learn more for JEE.

The patterns of both examinations are different and one must keep that in mind before preparing for both these examinations. The Boards is more subjective based but the JEE Main is an objective examination.

Proper guidance and the right study materials are required for the preparation of both these examinations simultaneously.

In this system, your percentile core is based on the performance of the highest scorer in your slot, thus if the paper is difficult, it will be difficult for all and your percentile will be decent even at a low score out of 300, on the other hand, if the paper is easy, it will be easy for all, and thus you get a similar percentile score even for very high marks out of 300.
